For Peer Support Specialist Training Developers
The Division of Mental Health, Developmental Disabilities, and Substance Abuse Services is in the process of reviewing updating the course content requirements and existing standards for the required 40-hour Peer Support Training.
As of August 29, 2012, the Division is no longer accepting new training curriculum to be reviewed or approved. Training curriculum currently approved with a re-certification date before April 2013 will have an extension to allow time to meet revised standards.
Additionally, DMHDDSAS and UNC BHRP are developing a “Train the Trainer” protocol to ensure quality, consistency, enhanced skills and knowledge, mastery of curriculum material and knowledge transfer to future NC Certified Peer Support Specialists.
We will be updating this page with details during this development process. Thank you for your cooperation.

New Requirement for Trainers: Reasonable Accommodations
All approved course trainers must provide reasonable accommodations for the 40-hour NCCPSS training candidates as per the Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA). Training applications must include a question on “Requests for Accommodations” with information on how participants must notify trainer in a timely manner (at least 2 weeks prior to the training) to be certain these accommodations can be made. Reasonable accommodations may include revising training materials to large print or sending material by web for use during training; providing qualified readers or interpreters; space/room arrangements- making facilities accessible; frequent breaks; etc. [Refer to the EEOC Guidelines for more information http://www.eeoc.gov/policy/docs/accommodation.html]
